I’ve been wanting to try a pizza in a dutch oven for a while now, but haven’t had the chance. The stars aligned and we finally got to go camping this weekend for the first time this year. I figured this would be the perfect time to make a pizza in a dutch oven. What could be better than pizza and camping?
After seeing recipes for cheeseburger pizzas around the Internets, I decided I wanted to try something similar. The only problem is that I don’t eat meat. Instead I decided to try it with just pickles. I floated around the idea of a pickle pizza to my husband and two of my sisters. All three thought it sounded, well, not good to put it nicely. It didn’t deter me, I was bent on trying it. I love pickles, I love pizza, I love BBQ sauce. How could it not be good?
For this pizza I used crescent rolls for the crust. When I was researching cooking pizza in a dutch oven, most recipes used either canned biscuits or crescent rolls. I thought it sounded interesting and after all, we were camping, so I went with it. After oiling the dutch oven thoroughly, I pressed the crescent rolls together to form the crust.
I then topped it with some BBQ sauce. I didn’t use my brother-in-law’s sauce this time because 1) my sister told me it would be sacrilege to put in on a pickle pizza and 2) I was all out. (Hint, hint, I need some more!)
Next came the cheese, a mixture of white cheddar and mozzarella, and the pickles.
I placed it on top of some hot coals and put more hot coals, and logs, on top. After about twenty minutes it was perfect.
I don’t know if it’s because everything tastes better when camping or what, but both of us liked this pizza. The husband, who is not a pickle lover and didn’t expect to like it one bit, thought it was good and enjoyed the crescent roll crust because it was “something different.” I wasn’t the biggest fan of the crust because between that and the Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce the pizza was a bit sweeter than I would have preferred. I think it would have been better with either a less sweet barbecue sauce or a regular crust. Overall, a decent pizza but not something I’d necessarily make again. Also, next time I make a dutch oven pizza I want to try a traditional crust.

1. I love pickles & I love pizza, so it sounds good to me! 2. One of Z’s favorite ‘appetizers’ is a water cracker topped with Sweet Baby Ray’s, a pickle, and a thin slice of cheese. So basically, a bite-sized pickle pizza!
Haha, I love that he eats that! I’ll have to try it some time.
1) I use to eat pickle and ketchup sandwiches.
2) My mom use to use ketchup as bbq sauce when heated with leftover roast.
3) Cheeseburgers have ketchup and pickles.
Therefore…..one could use ketchup instead of bbq sauce! Just a thought……
I’ll keep that in mind for next time, mom.
I know my hubby would love this. He loves BBQ sauce and pickles.
